My prior articles and classes on ADHD have presented information to parents looking for natural solutions for children who have already been diagnosed.  In a recent discussion with a client of a sensitive child still in kindergarten, we discussed how to prevent such a label and set her child up for success prior to starting school.

Being a firm believer in serendipity, I felt other parents must be in that same boat.  So this article will help you, as the parent of a sensitive child, learn the ins and outs of the ADHD label which is so commonly placed on sensitive or gifted children once they reach public school.

There are many puzzle pieces that can lead to lack of focus or hyperactivity in sensitive children and a possible misdiagnosis of ADHD.  Knowledge and prevention are the best medicine!

1.  The Race To The Top Program, like the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) before it, is test score driven.  It demands that all children take specific tests and reach certain scores per grade level.  The overall scores on these tests determine school funding.  The schools with the highest test scores receive the most funding and so it goes down the line for the schools with the lowest ranking test scores providing the least funding for the school.  Teachers’ salaries are also determined based on school funding and test scores.  If the children do not perform well on the tests, their school could be shut down.

An auditory teaching style currently predominates.  If your child is not an auditory learner, he/she may need extra attention to keep up.  Given all the budget cuts on both federal and state levels, the students who do the best have parent and community volunteers to help out at school.

Note:  If you don’t already know your child’s learning style, I would suggest you find out.  There are many free learning style assessments on-line as well as many books on the subject.  If your child is not an auditory learner, they may need additional help in their natural learning style to excel at school.  Some home school assessments offer information to teach a child learning styles other than their own.  If both you and your child know how he/she processes information, you will both be ahead of the curve and know what if any learning tools may be helpful.

2.  Research by Tom Elder at theUniversityofMichiganpublished in the Journal of Health Economics in 2010 stated that nearly one million children in theUnited Statesare potentially misdiagnosed with ADHD.  Children of a younger age than their classmates are often misdiagnosed with ADHD because of their level of maturity by comparison to older classmates.

Teachers judge a child in comparison to the other children in their same class in both behavior and ability.  Teachers may not realize that any lag may be due to age differences however slight.

3.  Allergies are very common among sensitive children.  Whether it’s an allergy to specific foods, dyes or other substances, it is quite common in today’s world.  If your child shows focus or hyperactivity issues, leaky gut may be an issue in addition to allergies.  Please find a DAN! doctor or a functional medicine doctor who make it a practice to find the root cause of symptoms.  Supplementation is often needed as well to balance neurotransmitters in the brain.  80% of neurotransmitters are created in the small intestine, so it makes sense to check the GI tract before you allow your child to be placed on ADHD medication.

Note:  If anyone suggests your child may have ADHD, please have them checked for leaky gut, allergies and neurotransmitter imbalances before you consider medication.  Once these issues are healed, should subside.  If some symptoms remain, toxins may, and usually are a factor as well.  Do not attempt to remove toxins without the care of a trusted professional.

4.  Unfortunately, we live in a very toxic world right now.  Our food supply is sprayed to kill bugs, treated with preservatives or genetically modified; animals are given hormones or other chemicals; some foods are completely processed and lacking valuable nutrients.  The body is a self-healing system in a perfect world.  If the body has a build-up of toxins, its ability to naturally eliminate them may become impaired.

Note:  According to Kenneth Bock, M.D. (a DAN! Doctor) and Cameron Stauth, authors of Healing the New Childhood Epidemics – Autism, ADHD, Asthma, and Allergies – The Groundbreaking Program for the 4-A Disorders, toxicity is a factor in all four conditions.

When using a detox product, please make sure to work with a doctor or trusted health care provider.  Also, be sure that whatever detox product you use has a built-in chelator to ensure safe removal of toxins.

5.  Since we are body, mind and Spirit beings, we each are complex and multi-faceted individuals.  I have found in working with children, teens and adults that limiting beliefs can hinder one’s success.  Limiting beliefs can exist consciously, unconsciously or as part of our collective societal agreements.  Everyone’s self-esteem is based upon their beliefs or what one thinks is possible.  Since thought always precedes emotion, upset emotions are a barometer for expectations a/k/a beliefs.

Note:  If your child has emotional upsets, he/she may have a belief that does not serve them.  Rather than tell your child “It’s OK.” or some other placating message, try asking them questions that begin with “how” or “what”.  Children will benefit from being heard and working through what they are feeling.  Listen for what they say AND what they don’t say and create a dialogue to reframe what might be a limiting belief.  Remember though that they must come up with the “reframe” to create the greatest impact.  If you find you are unable to help your child overcome emotional upsets through the coaching dialogue suggested above, please seek the help of a qualified professional.
